Google Reader support

instapaper:

Google’s new Send-to feature includes built-in support for Instapaper. Thanks, Google Reader team, for the inclusion in this handy feature.

The Instapaper bookmarklet now supports Google Reader natively as well. (You’ll need to reinstall it one more time. Sorry for the inconvenience. But if you’re using an RSS reader, you probably don’t mind dealing with URLs or Javascript.)

Simply invoke the Read Later bookmarklet when you have an item in Google Reader selected, and Instapaper will automatically save that item. This even works on Google Reader’s iPhone version.

Special thanks to Pascal Laliberté and Eugene Gordin for contributing to the bookmarklet’s Google Reader parsing.

Very cool. This is probably a good time to remind everyone that the enjoysthin.gs bookmark also works inside of google reader.

Enjoysthin.gs realtime “desktop” application.
Download and install Fluid.
Run Fluid and set the URL to enjoysthin.gs/realtime/fast
Run the new enjoysthin.gs application
Go to preferences and click on Advanced
Allow both enjoysthin.gs/realtime/fast and enjoysthin.gs/login
That’s it. It works pretty well. You can comment from it, but clicking any link opens in your actual browser. This is a fairly lightweight way to have enjoysthin.gs on your desktop at all times.

I turned off twitter importing a few weeks ago while testing something and forgot to turn it back on. So when I did finally get around to importing all the tweets, I decided to watch them zoom by in the realtime feed.

It’ll probably take a few hours to catch up, so if you’re interested, go ahead and watch it yourself.

I’m glad to announce the arrival of one of the most requested features (in a long time anyway).
For a while now, you’ve been able to get RSS feeds for the things you’ve enjoyed as well as your most enjoyable things. But now I’ve added the ability to get the RSS feed of the things all of your friends have enjoyed. Yep, you can view enjoysthin.gs from your favorite RSS reader or any other place that you see fit. Get started on the feeds page.
This comes on the heels of my very long and windbaggy post about how your website is like a bad boyfriend. It would have been pretty bad form if I hadn’t listened to myself.

Realtime is the best time

For one reason or another, I’ve been super interested in realtime on the web. I looked into how it worked and put up a quick version of a realtime feed for enjoysthin.gs. It worked by polling the server every few seconds and grabbing the latest content.

That sucked.

It was slow and hard on the server and utterly unscalable. It required a lot of hits to the server and a ton of extra database calls. Essentially, every time I polled the server I needed to make a new database call to look for new data.

Well, I’ve changed it. Now I can push content directly to your browser. As soon as I get it, I pass it on to you.

I’ll update the firefox plugin (which uses the old bad way), but until then I suggest you install the sidebar.

Totally stealing this from tumblr. Mouse down to the bottom of the page brings up the footer. Nice work guys.

Just wanted to make sure that it was totally clear that the enjoysthin.gs firefox extension works just fine on Firefox 3.5. So happy upgrading.

I’m releasing the (first) public beta of the enjoysthin.gs firefox extension. It’s got a bug or two, but let me know what you think.
Features:
When you view a page with enjoyed images, you see them highlighted.
See who enjoyed things on the page you’re looking at.
View the realtime feed (View -> Sidebar -> enjoysthin.gs OR comand-shift-E on a mac).
Enjoy anything from the toolbar or from a big button next to your home button (Right click on your toolbar and click Customize to put it wherever you want).
Comment on any page on the web, without enjoying it (and watch it show up in th realtime feed almost instantly).
See how many new things are waiting for you back on enjoysthin.gs
See how many messages you have waiting.
Install the extension.

The video proof that I’ve been working on the Firefox extension. I should be able to get a beta version of this out to people real soon now…

There are more features, but here’s what I cover in the video:

  1. The realtime sidebar and the main toolbar
  2. When you go to a web page, you can see what’s already been enjoyed on that page (you can turn this feature off with just one click)
  3. You can comment about any page directly from the toolbar without enjoying anything.

Are there any features you’re dying to have in it? Let me know and I’ll try to add them.

Ye Olde Firefox Extension is getting closer.
(Yes, the icons and the word Enjoylarity will change)
